AmTrustee Berhad no longer exists under that name. It is the former identity of what is today MTrustee Berhad (registration 198701004362 / 163032-V), incorporated on 28 July 1987 and in operation since March 1992. For years it was the trustee arm of the AmBank group, holding an address at Bangunan AmBank Group in Kuala Lumpur and acting as trustee for AmInvest unit trust funds. Ownership was split 80% across four AMMB subsidiaries (AmBank (M), AmInvestment Bank, AmCard Services and AmSecurities Holding), each holding 20%.

In 2016 AMMB Holdings divested its entire 80% shareholding, described as a non-core operation, for RM9.13 million. The buyers were Rockwills International Group chairman Johari Low Abdullah together with related parties (PL Advisory Services, PLAS Capital and PLAS Equity). Rockwills lists the 2016 acquisition of the trustee company on its own corporate milestones. The business was subsequently renamed MTrustee Berhad and now sits within the Rockwills International Berhad group, which reports capital funds in excess of RM40 million. Its registered office moved to Plaza Armada in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The company operates as an independent corporate trustee. Its work covers bond and sukuk issues, unit trust schemes, REITs, custodial services, escrow agency, and trusteeship for retirement, timeshare and interest schemes. It is governed by the Trustee Act 1949 and the Trust Companies Act 1949, with the SC regulating its trust services, BNM overseeing AML/CFT compliance, and SSM handling corporate statutory matters. As at 31 October 2025 it reported RM24.85 billion in assets under trust. Retail-facing services such as will writing, private trusts and estate administration are delivered through the broader Rockwills network rather than branded under the trustee entity.

A note on transparency: like most Malaysian trustee firms, detailed financials and governance information are not published. An Edge Malaysia report on the AMMB disposal carries a July 2026 byline date but describes the same 2016 transaction (a June dateline with a RM9.13 million price), so it appears to be an archived or re-surfaced article rather than a new deal. Anyone acting on the old "AmTrustee" or "AmBank trustee" name should verify current registration under MTrustee Berhad directly with the SC and SSM.

Services

  • Corporate trustee for bond and sukuk issues
  • Trustee for unit trust schemes
  • Trustee for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)
  • Custodial and escrow agent services
  • Trustee for retirement, timeshare and interest schemes
  • Private trust services (via the wider Rockwills group)
  • Will writing and estate administration (via the wider Rockwills group)

Strengths

  • Nearly four decades of corporate trusteeship experience, incorporated in 1987
  • SC-registered bond trustee handling bonds, sukuk, unit trusts and REITs
  • Backed by the Rockwills group, which reports capital funds in excess of RM40 million
  • Independent of any single bank since the 2016 AmBank divestment
  • Combines corporate trusteeship with retail estate planning through the Rockwills network

Watch-outs

  • The AmBank connection is outdated: AMMB sold its entire 80% stake in 2016 and the firm was renamed MTrustee Berhad, so "AmTrustee" no longer exists as an operating entity
  • Small paid-up capital base (issued share capital of RM500,000) typical of trustee companies
  • Public disclosure of financials and governance is limited
  • Retail estate-planning enquiries are effectively routed through the Rockwills brand rather than the trustee entity itself
